FOUND: On The 50th Anniversary Of JFK's Assassination, His Doctor's Watch

  • Today is the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, who was fatally shot in Dallas, Texas during a motorcade. The injured president was rushed to Parkland Memorial replica tag heuer monaco Hospital, where the attending neurosurgeon was Dr. Kemp Clark. Clark happened to be wearing this very special Patek Philippe ref. 1463 chronograph with pulsometer when he pronounced JFK dead. The watch will be part of Christie's December 17th sale in New York, with some of the proceeds benefiting the American Red Cross.

The Patek Philippe certificate of origin dates this watch to August 16th, 1949, and an extract from the archive has the watch being produced in 1948 and sold the following year in a red presentation box. Dr. Clark was the first owner of this watch, after his mother purchased it for him while traveling in Switzerland. He was in medical school at the time and accordingly Mrs. Hagar (his mother) had the tachymeter dial swapped for one with a pulsometer. This was done by Patek Philippe at the original time of sale, which is noted on the extract, and the caseback is engraved "Kemp Clark." The ref. 1463 was Patek's first water resistant chronograph and this example is just beautiful.

While Dr. Clark had a long and illustrious medical career, it is this watch's connection to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy that makes it a real piece of history. On November 22, 1963, at 12:30pm, President Kennedy was shot and rushed to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where Dr. Clark hurried to meet the incoming patient. At 1:00pm, with this watch on his wrist, Dr. Clark pronounced the President dead.

It's worth noting that Clark himself never said publicly that he used the watch for this purpose, but it was on his wrist that day and he was the doctor who called the time of death and filled out the death certificate. Even that this actual piece could have been used to take the dying president's pulse and referred to for the official time of death takes it from an interesting Patek Philippe chronograph to a real piece of history.

This watch is Lot 228 in Christie's December 17th Important Watches sale in New York, with an estimate of $100,000-150,000. Christie's will be donating a portion of the buyer's premium from this lot to the American Red Cross. You can see the full catalog entry here.

    Talking Watches With John Goldberger

John Goldberger doesn't play in the NBA (though, in his younger years, he could dunk a basketball C I've seen proof). He hasn't won a Grammy, nor has he dated Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Aniston, or Katy Perry (that we know of), but even if he had, he wouldn't talk about it. What John Goldberger is is a true horological scholar and serious collector of the highest order. His name in the world of watches is synonymous with expertise, quality, discretion, and taste. He is perhaps best known to watch lovers as the author of not only 100 Superlative Rolex Watches and Patek Philippe Steel Watches, but also books about early Omega and Longines. Goldberger didn't just write these books, either. He photographed, designed, and produced them too. Oh, and several of the watches featured in his books come from his personal collection.

The mega-collector stands about 6 foot 3, dresses in a way that a kid from upstate New York only dreams of, and is something of a watch collecting hero to me. For the past 40 years, John Goldberger has surrounded himself with the kind of watches that I personally love, strive to understand, and when the stars align, seek to purchase. Today, this incredibly thoughtful, charming, and discerning collector has agreed to open up a small selection of his expansive collection to us, and we promise you, you've never seen anything like it. There are a few in here that the world at large has never seen...
